Can You Really Afford Christmas This Year?

With prices for literally everything constantly on the rise, the thought of Christmas becomes even more daunting each year. Even though each year we always manage to scrape it together, it’s time that we started preparing properly so that Christmas isn’t such a huge whack on our wallets, and minds. It’s October already and it’s certainly time to begin thinking about either buying gifts, or saving to buy them. Here’s how you can attempt to afford Christmas this year.

Save

The first thing that you should immediately begin doing, is saving as much money as possible to spend when you come to do your Christmas shopping. Easier said than done sometimes, but even putting the smallest amount of money away from now until the time you go to shop will soon mount up. You will be surprised at how much you could save in the month and a half we ideally have left to sort out gifts.

If you buy gifts for non immediate family, consider lowering the amount you spend on them so that you have more money left at the end of it (or at least more than you originally would have.) This will allow you to concentrate on gifts for your close family and friends with more detail.

Go for bargains

A rather obvious point, you may think? You’d be surprised at how many people are willing to pay an extortionate amount on certain gifts to keep their loved ones happy. Rather than waiting until December to begin your shopping, why not go for the late autumn deals now to save yourself some money? It’s very likely that toys and clothing will be in the sales now before they up the price for the Christmas shoppers. It’s easy to find well priced gifts online these days too, so if you’re looking for fillers for men so that you can impress your partner this year, look online before heading out to the hustle and bustle of the stores.

Second hand

There’s no reason why second hand items are of less value to someone than something that’s brand new. If for example, your teenager is looking to have a new phone, then why not buy a second hand one that’s been refurbished to save yourself a massive bill? Your teenager will have the phone they’ve been after and you wouldn’t have shocked your bank account!

Sometimes you can find some really wonderful gifts in second hand shops too, so next time you’re in town go and have a browse to see if you can buy any gifts!

Don’t get lost in the hype

Finally, the most important thing to remember is to not get lost in the hype of Christmas. It’s so easy to overspend, especially when fellow Mothers at the school are bragging about what they’ve spent on their children. Chances are it’s not true or they’re in a lot of debt because of it. Remember to only buy what you can afford, because Christmas is about spending time with your loved ones, and having gifts is just an extra bonus of the day.
