It can be a little tricky knowing every item you need in your home when you have never owned one before, because a lot of the time the small things just won’t register in your mind. That is why today we have come up with the ultimate list of items we all need in our first home.
Starting with the main room of the home, when you are looking to fill your living room there are probably 4 items which come into your mind almost immediately. The sofa, the TV, a lamp and a coffee table. All of these you can buy from a place like Uncaged Ergonomics and these might be the only items you think about initially. However, for a living room there are other items which you will also need to complete the space. You will first of all want a TV stand or cabinet to house your consoles, cables and your TV box. Your router will likely go in here too to provide WiFi to the home. You will want to buy a lamp for the room in the evenings so you don’t have to have the main light on all evening. Some form of storage for your books, DVDs and other Knick knacks is another must in here. As for the finishing touches, a small rug on hardwood floor would be a homely touch, some cushions and blankets for colder evenings and some accessories like candles and ornaments.
The dining room is a room which is actually getting less and less frequent in the home because most modern homes are now open plan. If you do have a dining room though, there are a few items you will definitely need in the space. To start off with, you will want a decent dining table with the capability to fold in or extend depending on your guests. You will also need sturdy dining chairs with some cushioning. Throughout the rest of the room you will of course want a large cabinet where your glasses and crockery are stored, as well as a place for wine and other drinks for when you have guests.
The kitchen is very possibly the most item dense area of the home because you need to be able to store, cook and prepare both food and drink items. Because of this we of course won’t take too long listing every single item in the kitchen, however we will go over the essentials you need to start off with. First of all we have the appliances. Every kitchen needs an oven, a fridge, a freezer and a microwave. Even if you don’t think you need a microwave, it can honestly be a lifesaver on nights when you have no time to prepare food and need to heat up leftovers.
Once you have got your appliances you can move on to the small appliances and cookware items for the room. First of all, you will need a toaster, kettle and a coffee machine if you are a fan of your morning caffeine. You may also want a blender to make smoothies, soups and to blend up sauces for meals. For the cookware, there are plenty of different items you will need to go out and buy, so to make things easier here is a quick list:
- Mixing bowls
- Cooking trays
- A jug
- Measuring cups
- Casserole dish
- Bottle opener
- Tin opener
- Fish slice
- Cling film and foil
- Cheers grater
There are of course lots of other items you may want to buy too, but this is just a run down of the absolute essentials you need on the day you move in to your new home. This will make things much less stressful for you.
The bathroom is a room which can be the most simple to kit out if everything is already fitted, so we are only going to focus on the extra items we may need apart from the fittings. The first item which can make your bathroom feel much bigger and brighter is a mirror. A mirror is a piece of furniture which makes a big difference to the bathroom because it creates light and space as well as being practical as we brush our teeth and wash out face in the morning. After that, you will also want to add in a cabinet to store your toiletries, medicine and other bits so that your bathroom can stay tidy. Then to finish you will of course need some towels for the room. If you bathroom is plain, a splash of colour could be a great idea to bring some life into the space.
When you buy your first home you will need to get a few things in the the bedroom ready for your first night. The most essential piece of furniture you can have in this room is of course the bed. You can buy lots or styles, sizes and shapes of bed for your home so make sure you measure the space in advance. You can then choose a mattress to suit you and your partner. Take your time choosing your bed and mattress because this is an important decision to make. Once you’ve got the bed you can then look into buying some wardrobes and a vanity for the room. Make sure you buy a wardrobe which is big enough for everything! Fitted wardrobes can be a great space saving technique as well as giving you lots of space to hang and fold all of your clothes. Once you have all of the larger pieces, you will want to add a couple of bedside tables, a lamp and a mirror to finish the space.
