Mom’s Bathroom Retreat: Turn Your Bathroom into a Spa
So, your kids are screaming and running around the house all day? You’ve cooked broccoli for lunch, and they just pushed their plates away? You worked all day, cleaned the house, prepared lunch for the little ones, did the laundry, and everything you needed to do. At the end of the day, you just want peace, quiet and some privacy. For moms, usually the only room in the house where they can get that is the bathroom. But, you won’t be able to get that perfect moment for yourself in a cluttered bathroom that doesn’t inspire serenity. Here are a few tips that will help you transform your regular bathroom into a self-care spa.
Before you start decorating, you need a relatively blank canvas to work with. For that, you need to create a minimalistic look. Remember that the majority of the best spas are not opulent, they are light in decor and neutral in color. So, get rid of all the things you don’t need, and find an appropriate storage solution for the ones you do, but that don’t have to be out in the open. You can use woven baskets, bins or other props to hide away those items that are visually cluttering the space.
Get inspired by Scandinavian style
There is no spa like a Scandinavian spa, and this should be your basic concept upon which you will build your entire bathroom décor. What does this mean? A lot of neutral light colors, an abundance of light (large windows, multiple light sources) and natural materials, such as wood, stone, brick and clay. You don’t have to go as far as to install a new sink. You can simply add a wooden bench, place driftwood on the vanity, and add some concrete artwork.
Make the bathtub your centerpiece
Of course, an ordinary bath has no place in a spa. Fortunately, it is possible to find beautiful freestanding bathtubs and even stone tubs, at relatively affordable prices. But, a nice tub isn’t the only thing you’ll need. A bath tray (preferably wooden) will complete the experience, because you can use it to place candles, fresh flowers, a book, and of course, a glass of wine – mommy needs her five minutes.
Make it come to life
Have you heard that houseplants have a soothing effect on one’s mind? Besides, they can purify the air and make any space look more appealing. Just choose the plants that can thrive in wet and dark places, such as Bamboo, Begonia, Aloe Vera, Chinese Evergreen, etc., and place them in the corner of your bathroom. A couple of vases with fresh flowers will fill the bathroom with natural scents, making it smell amazing.
All (not) lit up
Lighting plays a crucial role in any room. For a perfect spa atmosphere, though, you won’t be needing strong lights. To light up your bathroom perfect for a relaxing long bath, you will need nothing but a statement chandelier above the tub (so stylish), and a few candles of different sizes. You can also go a step further and get candles with soothing scents, such as lavender.
A stone bed in the sink
If you have ever visited a spa center you have probably noticed that they use a lot of dark smooth stones for decoration. So, try to find a couple of similar stones, and place them at the bottom of your sink. This way, you will create your own, miniature babbling brook.
Choose a signature line of cosmetics
Finding an ideal toiletry line is not easy, but after some trial and error, your efforts will prove to be worthwhile. Aside from benefiting your skin, these products will look charming when grouped together on your bathroom shelf or vanity, or when placed together in a chic woven basket or stone bowl. Make sure you judge products not only based on their quality (which is, of course, a priority), but also based on their packaging which should be uniform.
Find some nontraditional towels, just for you
A family bathroom usually has a lot of different towels, many of them featuring cartoon characters. This will not provide you with the spa feel you are aiming for. Purchase a couple of towels that are just for you and your “me time”. Be sure they reflect a distinctive natural vibe. For example, choose rich jewel or neutral muted tones, and linen instead of the traditional terry cloth. Whatever you opt for, the towels should feel special.
As a mom, you do a job worthy of a superhero, so don’t feel bad when you need to take some time for yourself because you deserve it. In fact, you should indulge in a luxurious soothing bath whenever you want to, and this will be much better if you make these small adaptations to your bathroom.
