Major Organic & Sustainable Food Trends In 2018

In my family, we’ve been doing our best to exercise and eat healthy.  That’s why, when Helen contacted me about this guest post – I was overly excited!  So without further ado, here’s Major Organic & Sustainable Food Trends in 2018!

Every year we see an abundance of new trends that take the world by storm. From fashion and cosmetics to hair care and diets, new things pop up and people fall in love with them in an instant. Food trends don’t change as rapidly as fashion ones do, so it’s a bit easier keeping track. While in 2017 people focused more on plant-based diets, this year is all about going organic, being sustainable, and a few more unexpected innovations.

Eat the décor too

The eternal struggle: should I eat the decorations after I’ve finished the course? It seems that the answer is ‘yes’, at least when it comes to flower decorations. Edible flowers are on the rise and you can easily spot them everywhere you look: in coffee, popsicles, as well as marshmallows. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should go on and eat the roses that decorate the table, but you will likely notice more citrusy elderflowers as well as bright pink hibiscus flowers on the market. Not only do flower petals look great as décor of pretty much any course, but they’re healthy and delicious at the same time. This means more beautiful, edible garnish in restaurants!

Powder everything

Powders have always been present in our diets, but discreetly, mostly in form of spices such as turmeric. This year brings us unexpected innovations and breakthroughs in ‘powder fields’ and we’re getting a lot of incredibly healthy and nutritious power powders to choose from. There are great medicinal mushroom powders packed with antioxidants you can choose from and you can start drinking your mushroom coffee in the morning. Protein powders are becoming increasingly popular outside bodybuilder community too and today you can enjoy your healthy protein pancakes for dessert without feeling guilty. Turmeric powder is here to stay, as is matcha, which means that you will be much healthier without having to drastically change your habits.

Organic heaven

People have been paying more attention to where their food comes from and food-producers have been happy to provide more information. There has been a significant increase in demand for organic food, so it’s only been natural that the market continues to grow too. Not only does organically grown food benefits the planet, but it’s much healthier too because it contains fewer toxins. In the US, Amazon purchased Whole Foods Market and now you are able to get organic food on Amazon Prime. This means that such food is more accessible than ever, and even though it’s still rather pricey, people understand the reasons for the price and are willing to put aside more money for such products.

Touch of exotic

Who doesn’t like trying out different things? Exotic spices, recipes from other countries, and dishes from other cultures make our diet and our lives more exciting, and it looks like this year the focus will be on Middle Eastern food. With so many different legumes to choose from and healthy spices to add to our diet, it’s a wonder we’ve been waiting so long to give it a try. Fava beans, lentils, chickpeas, pomegranate, dates, cardamom, and cumin are becoming more prominent in the cooking world. Since a number of Middle Eastern dishes are vegan, people who are focusing on plant-based diets will find joy in trying out different exotic recipes.

Plant-based everything

Speaking of plant-based diets, their popularity will continue to grow in 2018 as well, and more people will start paying attention to it since vegan meals will not look like traditional ‘vegan meals of old’. Tofu isn’t the only meat substitute you can use, and jackfruit is drawing more attention than ever before. Cauliflower, different mushrooms, rice, and celery roots are becoming more prominent, and coconut bacon is making an appearance and drawing more attention by the day. When you throw coconut in white miso (liquid smoke) and cover it with maple, what you get is a crunchy, smokey bacon substitute you can enjoy on a pizza or in a sandwich.

Every year we get a new food trend people start obsessing over, but even though something is popular it doesn’t mean that you’re going to love it or that it’ll be good for you. Don’t hesitate to try out different things, but if you don’t like something don’t hesitate to put it behind you and try something new. It’s important to listen to your body and to eat food that will make you healthy and strong, and not just blindly follow every new trend.
