Common Sleep Problems: Causes and Solutions

Many of us struggle to get a good night’s sleep when we need to, but there are all manner of different sleep problems which cause this. Perhaps you are up all night tossing and turning or you seem to have a habit of waking up early every day. Well, in this article, we are going to address some of the most common sleeping issues and provide you with some possible solutions that will hopefully help you to get the 40 winks that you need so much.

Tossing and Turning

If you find yourself tossing and turning all night, one of the most likely causes is that you are too hot. You will enjoy a better night’s sleep if you are cool, so don’t pile your bed too high with blankets. Try turning the heating off or opening the window to cool things down if your need to.

Grogginess When You Wake

A couple of likely causes of grogginess when you wake up are a change of routine or oversleeping. We have a natural body clock which times your hormone production when you normally wake up. The solution is fairly obvious, but effective nevertheless – you should establish a regular sleeping routine and stick to it all the time, even on weekends. Essentially, you should be aiming for the same number of hours sleep every night during a regular timetable.

Daytime Tiredness

Another hugely common issue, daytime tiredness is something that affects all of us at one point or another. The obvious answer is that you aren’t getting enough sleep at night, but if you are, the problem may be that you aren’t getting the quality deep sleep that you need. One of the main causes may be anxiety, so you should take the time to engage in some destressing activity every evening. Otherwise, you should take steps to improve your sleeping environment, by investing in some overstock sheets, blocking out the light with blackout blinds, and wearing earplugs to cancel out any background noise.

Waking in the Night

There are many reasons why you may be waking up in the middle of the night. It may be that you are eating too close to bedtime or you are drinking too much alcohol. Also, as we get older, sleeping through the night becomes more difficult. Stress also plays a factor in many cases. The obvious solutions involve cutting back on late night meals, drinking, and engaging in a calming bedtime ritual.

Early Rising

Two of the main triggers that cause us to rise early every day include depression and environmental factors. The first three hours of sleep tend to be uninterrupted, but it is the later sleep that tends to be more prone to disruption. The best thing that you can do is to minimise these disruptions which tend to include light, noise and heat.

If you suffer from any of these issues, try the solutions listed to allow you to get the nightly sleep you need for a healthy body and mind.
