Winter Is Coming! Is Your Home Ready?

It might only feel like a few weeks ago that we were all sunbathing by the pool in our swimsuits but those days are well and truly over now. Instead, we’ve got frigid winds, grey clouds, and chunky sweaters instead. Whether you love winter more than anything or you’re dreading the cold weather, there’s no denying that it’s nearly here and it’s time to get ready for it. One way in which far too many people fail to get ready for winter is in their homes. Your winter wardrobe might be sorted, but is your home ready for the cold season? With that in mind, here are a few ways that you can get your home ready for winter’s arrival.

Clear the gutters

One of the most common household problems that people run into when the winter rolls around is the fact that they don’t realise just how clogged their gutters are. Over the summer, any dirt or mud on them will have turned into a hefty crust. Not only that but the fallen leaves are going to bung them up even more. Mix that will rainfall, and you’ve got a perfect recipe for overflowing and flooded gutters. Before the weather gets too miserable, make sure that you get up there and clear out those gutters. It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it!

Check the pipes

99% of the time you can rely on your water pipes to work without any trouble. However, the 1% of the time that things go wrong, they often go wrong in spectacular fashion. Make sure that you check your pipes before the weather gets too cold for any structural damage. When water freezes, it expands, and if that happens to damaged pipes, then they can split. It hardly takes a genius to figure out what happens next when the water melts. Of course, it’s also a good idea to keep water moving through the pipes so that they don’t freeze up in the first place.

Warm the place up

After a long as warm summer, you’ve probably forgotten what it’s like to have a cold home. Often, the change in temperature happens so slowly that you don’t even notice until you wake up in the middle of the night shivering with cold, trying to curl up under every single inch of your sheets. Make sure that you do everything you can to keep your home warm. From replacing the windows with double glazing from companies like Historical Windows to keeping the heating running as often as possible. Of course, if you’re looking to save a little bit of money then you can always just cover yourself in layers and curl up under a blanket.

Even if you’re not such a fan of the season, the truth is that it’s going to get here no matter what. So, rather than spending the entire time sulking, it’s better to just embrace it and make the most of it! Make yourself a cup of hot cocoa, curl up under a blanket, and start catching up on all those shows you swore you’d eventually get round to!
