The Must Have Pregnancy Essentials

There seems to be something in the water around here.  Several of my friends are learning to adjust to life with newborns, getting ready to pop out babies anytime now, or just learning that they will be welcoming a new bundle of joy in the future.  As a woman who has already been through that stage a few times now, I’m often asked for advice on how to do things, or what items to purchase to help make life easier.  I’m happy to share my knowledge, which includes the disclaimer that I am not an expert and don’t claim to have all the answers.  But, having been down the road before, I do know a few things that I wouldn’t have changed for anything, and things that I wish I would have done differently.

Shopping is one of those areas.  There are so many things out there that the world will tell you you just HAVE to have in order for your pregnancy to be smooth sailing.  Some things are absolutely wonderful, while others could really be skipped without a second thought.  What are those must have items?  Let me share with you some of my choices.

Pregnancy Body Pillow

A body pillow is something that I wish I would have learned about sooner!  My first two pregnancies, I did not have one.  It was with my youngest that I finally experienced the relief that one of these can bring.  You snuggle up with this soft, usually C shaped pillow and they just support you in all the places that you need.  My sleep was transformed when I started using this – to the point that even after my angel was born and no longer a baby, I didn’t want to part with it!  Pregnancy Pillow Judge has wonderfully helpful information on pregnancy body pillows, their health benefits and how to choose the best one for you.

Foot Spa

Our feet take a beating when we are pregnant.  Being able to allow them to soak in a spa like setting is a real blessing.  I’m not saying visit the spa daily – I know that we don’t have the time or money for all that – but I am recommending getting one of those little at home spas to use.  They will give a little jacuzzi bubble feel while allowing you to soak your sore feet.  Add in some epson salt for a real treat!  I know after a long day, there was nothing I would enjoy more than putting on a nice pair of comfy pjs and soaking my feet while sitting on the couch watching tv and eating ice cream.

Water Bottle

I’m a big coffee, tea and soda drinker on a typical day.  All of these are no-nos when pregnant, according to the doctors.  So, while I admit I couldn’t fully give them up, I did my best to cut way back on the amount of them that I drank.  Not typically being a water drinker, I found just making a glass from the sink very difficult.  That’s when my water bottle saved me.  I splurged a bit and bought one of those fancy ones with the filter that was designed to keep the water super cold.  Let me tell you, it worked!  I have never drank water on as consistent of a basis as I did when I was pregnant, carrying that water bottle around with me everywhere.  Get a good one that you like the look and benefit of, and then keep it with you at all times.

Hard Candies

I carried candies with me in my purse everywhere I went when I was pregnant (and even most days still).  I found that they helped calm the nausea a little bit, helped with sugar crashes, and just gave me something to pop in my mouth when I wanted something sweet.  Whether you go for the suckers specially designed for pregnancy, or something as simple as Jolly Ranchers, having hard candies on hand can be a real life saver.

That’s All Folks!

The world will tell you that you need a lot more things to make it through pregnancy.  In some cases, you might need a bit more, but for an average mom having a routine pregnancy, that’s all she wrote.  It’s not about the stuff that you purchase, but the care that you provide for yourself.  Slow down and enjoy this time.  Pamper yourself a bit and allow your body to do what it needs to do.  God has designed us to be the vessels to bring life into this world, and He gave us what we need to accomplish this.  If you want to get all the fancy new toys that are designed for the mommies to be – go for it!  But don’t feel as if you aren’t a good mother if you don’t.
